David Van Cortlandt Crosby was born on August 14, 1941 in Los Angeles, California. He was the second son of Academy Award-winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby .

Studied University Elementary School/ LA, the Crane Country Day School/ Montecito, and Laguna Blanca School/ Santa Barbara, drama at Santa Barbara City for brief.

Joined Byrds in 1964. With a cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan they gave hit in April 1965. Crosby worked on Byrds' first few albums and contributed in the 1973 reunion album.

In 1968 he formed Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) with Graham Nash & Stephen Stills.CSN won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1969 for their debut album.
