Jacinda Kate Laurell Ardern was born 26 July 1980 in Hamilton, NZ. Father, Ross Ardern, was a police officer, mother Laurell Ardern was a school catering assistant

Her aunt, Marie Ardern, a longstanding member of the Labour Party, recruited the teenaged Ardern at the age of 17 during 1999 general election.
